Being Less of a Boss and More of a Coach

“All coaching is, is taking a player where he can’t take himself.” Bill McCartney

As leader you know by now that we all go through ups and downs. Throughout your life you are guaranteed, at some point, to hit a rough patch. Whether it’s school or sports, relationships, work, you’re going to need a little bit of help getting over that challenge. Fact is sometimes you really need to reach out to someone for help.

That is why coaching is so important. With an external, non-emotional perspective on your situation, a coach or a mentor will help you solve it faster than you could have on your own. As Einstein said, you can’t solve a problem with the same mind that created it. The beauty of it is that by having the experience of being coached, you will also be able to coach others in return.

Would you rather have someone shouting at you, saying “Hey, just get this done!” or would you rather have someone saying “Hey, let me work with you. Let me help you out”? A good coach works off your strengths. Integrate coaching skills into your business approach. That’s what servant leadership is all about. It’s leading by example, empowering team members by showing them the way instead of telling them what to do.

“You’re always going to work better with someone who is willing to sit down with you one-on-one and coach you, help you accomplish whatever it is you want to accomplish so that you can feel succeeded,” Michael Jelinek, PCI Associate emphasizes. So, do that! Let your associates know that you are there for them, that your door is always open when they need support.
